Twenty-Two

Gunfire exploded in bursts from the other side of the roof.

Damnation, Aera thought as she raced toward the nearest dropship, her teammates in tow. Vapor trails traced the air and made sharp bangs where the pellets hit the rooftop behind them. I hoped we could do this without getting shot at.

You are now within firing range of four enemy dropships, Grey said.

Aera watched the guns of the nearest ship pivot toward her. Double damnation! ‘Watch out,’ she yelled. ‘This one sees us.’

‘Got it,’ Fai said. ‘Evasive running.’

Aera weaved back and forth as she ran at the ship.

A little closer.

She broke left, putting the ship’s guns and the cockpit to her right. She ran hard, then circled around the front of the ship. She felt the guns tracking her the whole way.

Those guns were made to target and attack big ships at a distance, Aera knew, not human sized targets running around at close range. But a direct hit might not leave enough senshi behind for a Greysuit to repair. The suits had their limits, after all.

She turned to face the ship head on and sprinted at it. The bottom gun fired and she felt a streak of hot air pass her right shoulder.

Too close.

She jumped and caught the front of the cockpit with both hands. Her legs swung under and she felt her fingers slip. She imagined them sticking to the ship like glubands.

And they did. Thanks, Grey.

Aera pulled herself up over the edge, then gradually made her way up the cockpit. She found herself sending Grey pictures instead of words, imagining her palms stick to and release from the slick canopy.

Half way up, she had Grey make a sort of spiked hammer over her right fist.

Then, in her helmet, she heard Jinda yell in pain. She looked up, but could not see Jin or Fai. They had gone after the second dropship.

Aera heard Fai yell Jinda’s name, then Jinda coughing, struggling for air.

Aera raised her hammered fist high and brought it down on the cockpit with all her strength.

The canopy cracked.

She hit it again.

Then again.

And again.

Finally, she broke through.

She brought her fist out and saw a gun barrel pointing up at her. She pivoted sideways on her left hand, still stuck to the canopy. The gun fired, sending a trail of vapor streaking through the hole she had made.

It fired again. Then a third time.

Aera covered her head with her free arm.

The fourth and fifth bangs were not followed by vapor trails. Instead, the canopy next to her cracked like it had been punched from the inside.

Then nothing.

Aera waited. She heard Jinda’s labored breathing in her helmet.

‘Aera,’ Fai said. ‘I’ve got her, but she needs help.’

God help me, Aera thought. She reached over and pulled at the edge of the hole. Pieces of canopy cracked and broke off. She pulled again, breaking more away, until she thought she could fit through.

Here goes.

She held the edge of the hole with her right hand and released her left. Grabbing both sides, she pulled herself through, head first.
